As crianças e os adolescentes com este diagnóstico requerem tratamentos intensivos e internamentos prolongados. O questionário Paediatric Oncology Quality of Life Scale é um instrumento de avaliação da qualidade de vida de crianças com cancro e seus sobreviventes. O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar uma população pediátrica com linfoma de Burkitt e avaliar a sua qualidade de vida. Material e Métodos: Foram incluídas 48 crianças com linfoma de Burkitt entre 1993 e 2022 seguidas num serviço de oncologia pediátrica português. Foram recolhidos e analisados dados demográficos e clínicos. Os pais/representantes legais avaliaram a perceção da qualidade de vida destas crianças durante os tratamentos através do preenchimento da versão portuguesa da Paediatric Oncology Quality of Life Scale. Resultados: A taxa de incidência na região centro de Portugal foi de 0,34 casos por 100.000 pessoas-ano, com idade média ao diagnóstico de 7,8 ± 3,7 anos e um pico de incidência dos 5 aos 9 anos (n=24, 60%). A maioria eram rapazes (n=41, 85%) e a apresentação mais comum foi a doença abdominal (n=26, 54%). A taxa de letalidade foi de 6,3% (n=3). As taxas de sobrevida livre de eventos e global foram de 88,9% e 93,8%, respetivamente. A taxa de resposta ao questionário foi de 51% (n=23), sendo o tempo médio desde o fim do tratamento de 15,7 ± 2,4 anos (mínimo 4, máximo 28). Os scores do questionário variaram entre 23 e 107 (média: 61,8 ± 27), com igual impacto nos três domínios avaliados. Houve tendência para melhor tolerância ao tratamento nos anos mais recentes, mas sem atingir diferença estatística.Conclusões: O linfoma de Burkitt na região centro de Portugal é comumente esporádico, com um predomínio da doença abdominal, surgindo mais frequentemente em rapazes e na segunda e terceira infância. Verificámos que o linfoma de Burkitt afeta significativamente a qualidade de vida dos nossos doentes, e os resultados sugerem que este efeito pode ser superior comparativamente a outros tumores pediátricos.Introduction: Burkitt lymphoma is a fast-growing and highly aggressive type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Consequently, children with Burkitt lymphoma require intensive treatments and prolonged hospitalizations. The Paediatric Oncology Quality of Life Scale is a questionnaire for assessing the quality of life of children with cancer or cancer survivors. This study aimed to characterize a paediatric population with Burkitt lymphoma and to evaluate their quality of life.Material and Methods: All 48 children diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma from 1993 to 2022 followed at a Portuguese Paediatric Oncology Centre were included. Demographic and clinical data were collected and analysed. Their parents/legal guardians were invited to report on the quality of life of these patients during treatment using the Portuguese version of the Paediatric Oncology Quality of Life Scale. Results: The incidence rate in the Central Region of Portugal was 0.34 cases per 100.000 person-years, with a mean age at diagnosis of 7.8 ± 3.7 years old and most cases diagnosed in the 5–9 years old age group¬ (n=24, 60%). Forty-one (85%) were boys and the most common presentation was an abdominal tumour (n=26, 54%). The total lethality rate was 6.3% (n=3). Event-free and overall survival rates were 88.9% and 93.8%, respectively. The response rate to the questionnaire was 51% (n=23), the mean time elapsed since treatment being 15.7 ± 2.4 years (range: 4–28). Questionnaire scores ranged from 23 to 107 (mean 61.8 ± 27), with an equal impact on the three domains evaluated. There was a trend to better treatment tolerance in most recent years, but without reaching statistical difference. Conclusions: According to our findings, Burkitt lymphoma in the Central Region of Portugal is mostly of the sporadic variant, characterized by male predominance, mid-childhood set-up, and abdominal presentation.
