Esta decisão colocou o país num impasse político, que à data de escrita deste Trabalho de Projecto ainda se encontra por terminar. A literatura económica muito se tem debruçado sobre os efeitos que o Brexit terá, tanto na economia britânica como no resto do mundo, tendo concluído por larga maioria que ambos os países ficarão numa situação económica pior com a reimposição de fronteiras. Com este Trabalho de Projecto, pretendemos perceber os efeitos que o anúncio de saída -e não a saída, do Reino Unido da União Europeia, causou na economia britânica. Para isso, recorremos ao método de análise contrafactual, prevendo um conjunto de variáveis da economia britânica em cenário onde o anuncio de Brexit não aconteceu, e medindo o que o se afastou relativamente ao seu valor efetivo. Para fazer a previsão das variáveis no cenário contrafactual recorremos ao método ARIMA. As nossas conclusões são de que, caso o Brexit não tivesse sido anunciado: i) a taxa de câmbio da Libra Esterlina relativamente ao Dólar Americano não teria tido uma tendência de depreciação tão acentuada; ii) o crescimento dos salário reais não teria sido tão elevado nos primeiros dois anos pós referendo, mas seria mais elevado no último ano de análise; iii) o crescimento do índice de preços no consumidor não teria tido uma tendência tão acentuada de crescimento e iv) o Produto Interno Bruto teria crescido a um ritmo mais elevado e ao final de 3 anos de anúncio de Brexit estaria 3% mais elevado.On June 23rd of 2016, the United Kingdom voted by referendum to withdraw from the European Union. This decision placed the country in a political stalemate, which at the time of writing this Project Work is still to be completed. The economic literature has been much concerned with the effects that Brexit will have, both in the British economy and in the rest of the world, having concluded by a large majority that both countries will be worse off with the reimposition of borders. With this dissertation, we intend to understand the effects that the United Kingdom’s referendum announcement of withdrawing from the European Union -and not Brexit itself, had on the British economy. For this, we use a counterfactual analysis methodology, predicting a set of macroeconomic variables of the British economy in a scenario where the Brexit announcement did not happen and measuring what drifted away from its effective value. To forecast the variables in the counterfactual scenario, we use the ARIMA method.
