O domínio marítimo apresenta-se como um espaço vital para a segurança, estabilidade e prosperidade do mundo inteiro. As ameaças, outrora bem definidas, desenvolvem-se para ambiente transnacional, afetando a segurança marítima regional, com repercussões na estabilidade da Comunidade Internacional. As operações de segurança marítima ganham assim uma importância extrema, onde a conjugação de fatores e esforços da vertente convencional têm de coexistir com o Direito Internacional Marítimo e a soberania de nações terceiras. Quanto à metodologia aplicámos um Design de Pesquisa do tipo “Estudo de Caso”, uma vez que admite consumar uma análise detalhada e abrangente do objeto de estudo. A estratégia de pesquisa é qualitativa e o raciocínio hipotético-dedutivo. Para fundamentar este estudo recorremos a diversas publicações de referencia e foram efetuadas diversas entrevistas semiestruturadas a personalidades de reconhecida competência na área das operações de segurança marítima. Concluímos que, para fazer face aos desafios prevalecentes no quadro estratégico do Mediterrâneo, a organização OTAN deve fomentar e investir na consciencialização situacional marítima e, conduzir operações de segurança marítima de cariz contínuo e preventivo, garantindo assim a articulação, interoperabilidade, flexibilidade e dinamismo de meios para mitigar as emergências transnacionais. Abstract: The maritime domain is vital to the security, stability, and prosperity of the entire world. Once considered, as well defined, threats are now developing into a transnational environment, affecting regional maritime security, with repercussions on the stability of the international community as a whole. Maritime security operations are thus of the utmost importance, where the blend of conventional factors and efforts, on the conventional slope must coexist with the application of the International law of the sea and the sovereignty of third part nations. As for methodology, we applied as research design the “Case Study”, since it admits to consummating a detailed and comprehensive analysis of maritime security operations. The research strategy is qualitative, and the rationale is hypothetical-deductive. In order to support this study, we research several Publications of reference and, carried out, several semi-structure interviews with renowned personalities in the area of maritime security operations. We conclude that, in order to meet the prevailing challenges in the Mediterranean strategic framework, NATO must foster and invest efforts in maritime situational awareness in order to execute maritime security operations framing continuous and at preventive label, encouraging platforms articulation, interoperability, flexibility and dynamic features to mitigate transnational emergencies.
