Neste percurso analisaremos o crescimento patrimonial da Santa Casa nas suas múltiplas dimensões, ao mesmo tempo que afirmava a sua identidade e construía a sua memória, tendo por base os legados deixados pelos benfeitores. Escrever sobre a história das Misericórdias, confrarias laicas de imediata proteção régia, é não só analisar a ação social na prática das obras de misericórdia, mas também olhar para o seu valiosíssimo património artístico, cultural e documental, que pretendemos salientar ao longo deste estudo. Na continuidade do período medieval, o homem moderno acreditava convictamente na vida eterna. A morte ocupava o seu quotidiano. Mais do que temê-la, receava a incerteza do momento em que ocorreria e, acima de tudo, a morte repentina, sem a preparação necessária que a Igreja Católica aconselhava. Uma boa morte asseguraria o caminho para a salvação da alma, pensamento que norteava todo o crente da Idade Moderna. A preocupação com a vida eterna traduziu-se na preferência por certos legados: os mais frequentes em favor das missas e da salvação da alma. Mas também ganharam preponderância os que beneficiam as mulheres suscetíveis de enveredar por caminhos pecaminosos e em risco de corromper a sua alma ou dos que estavam à sua volta. Nas preocupações dos legatários sobressaem também os presos, os doentes e pobres envergonhados. A Misericórdia devia cumprir estas obrigações com diligência e rigor, alimentando de forma perpétua os laços que uniam vivos e mortos, num quotidiano profundamente marcado por orações, responsos, ladainhas e missas. O nosso percurso estende-se desde o século XVI, altura em que a instituição foi fundada, até ao final do século XVIII, quando as Santas Casas começaram a apresentar sinais de crise, motivados por profundas mudanças sociais, culturais e políticas. Como o nosso estudo se centra na formação da memória e do património da Misericórdia de Braga, importa refletir sobre os motivos que nortearam a instituição de legados por parte dos benfeitores e de que forma procuravam perpetuar a sua memória e serem lembrados na comunidade ao mesmo tempo que investiam na sua salvação.Our study focuses on Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Braga, as a receiving institution of legacies, whether for the salvation of the soul or for the body treatment, analyzing its role as manager of the possessions of the dead. In this course, we analyze the patrimonial growth of Santa Casa in its multiple dimensions, while the institution affirmed its identity and built its memory based on the legacies left by benefactors. Writing about the history of Misericórdias, secular brotherhoods under immediate royal protection, is not just analyzing the social action based on the practice of works of mercy, but also looking at its most valuable artistic, cultural and documental heritage, which we intend to highlight throughout this study. All through the Middle Age, the modern man firmly believed in eternal life. And death occupied his mind daily. More than fearing it, he dreaded the uncertainty of the moment it would occur and, most of all, sudden death without the required preparation that the Catholic Church recommend. A good death would ensure the way to the salvation of the soul, a thought that guided every believer in the Modern Age. The concern for eternal life resulted in predilection for certain legacies, the most frequent in favor of masses and the salvation of the soul. But also reached predominance the legacies that benefited susceptible women for sinful paths and at risk of corrupting their souls or those around them. In benefactors concerns also stand out the prisoners, the ill and the ashamed poor. Santa Casa da Misericórdia should accomplish these obligations with diligence and rigor, perpetually nourishing the bonds that united the living and the dead, in a daily life deeply marked by prayers, responsories, litanies and masses. Our path extends since the 16th century, when the Santa Casa of Braga was founded, until the end of the 18th century, when the institution began to present signs of crisis, motivated by deeply social, cultural, and political changes.
