O presente relatório de estágio curricular de Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Veterinária está dividido em três partes. A “Parte I” que corresponde ao relatório de atividades desenvolvidas durante o estágio no Hospital Veterinário do Restelo - HVR, durante o período de três de Setembro de 2012 a 28 de Fevereiro de 2013, sob co- orientação do Dr. Jorge Cid. Na “Parte II” é feita uma revisão bibliográfica sobre as infeções de trato urinário-ITU, em felinos e na “Parte III” é então feita a caracterização da atividade de pesquisa desenvolvida no mesmo hospital. A ITU é definida como a afeção temporária ou permanente nas defesas do organismo, permitindo assim a adesão, multiplicação e persistência dos microrganismos neste sistema. As ITU’s podem ser classificadas segundo a sua localização, em superior ou inferior ou quanto à presença de fatores de risco, em complicada ou não complicada. Segundo o nosso estudo, as ITU’s possivelmente estão a ser sub-diagnosticadas, o género feminino é o mais afetado, surgem mais frequentemente em felinos geriátricos e os sinais clínicos poderão ser um pouco diferentes dos clássicos de trato urinário. Os agentes etiológicos mais isolados foram a E. coli e o Staphylococcus intermedius. As alterações características na análise de Urina Tipo II nem sempre se verificaram na presença de ITU’s, pelo que é assim essencial a realização da urocultura e respetivo teste de sensibilidade aos antibióticos-TSA, de forma a dirigir a terapêutica consoante o agente, o tipo de infeção e o organismo hospedeiro; ### Abstract- Characterization of Urinary Tract Infections in Cats This report traineeship of Master in Veterinary Medicine is divided into three parts. In "Part I" corresponds to the report of the activities undertaken during the internship at the Restelo Veterinary Hospital – HVR, during the period from 3 September 2012 to 28 February 2013, under the co-direction of Dr. Jorge Cid. In "Part II" is made a literature review on urinary tract infections-UTI, in cats and "Part III" is then made to characterize the research activity developed in the same hospital. The UTI is defined as a temporary or permanent breach in host defense mechanisms allowing adhesion, multiplication and persistence of the virulent microbes in the urinary tract. UTI’s can be classified according to their location, in upper or lower or for the presence of the risk factors, in uncomplicated or complicated. According to our study, the UTI’s possibly is being under diagnosed, the female gender is the most affected, occurs more often in geriatric cats and the clinical signs may be slightly different from the classic of the urinary tract. The etiologic agents isolated were E. coli and Staphylococcus intermedius. The characteristic changes in the urinalysis type II aren’t always observed in the presence of UTI, it is therefore essential for the realization of the respective urine culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing, in order to plan the therapeutic according to the agent, to the type of infection and to the host organism.
