Introdução: Cada vez mais pessoas podem proporcionalmente chegar a idades mais longevas. Estima-se que no ano de 2025 existam, aproximadamente, 1,2 biliões de pessoas com idades acima dos 60 anos (OMS, 2002). O envelhecimento é, assim, considerado um dos maiores desafios da modernidade. Por esse facto a OMS catapultou o conceito de envelhecimento ativo para o discurso oficial querendo com este conceito valorizar esta fase do ciclo vital. Objetivos: O objetivo deste estudo é analisar as representações sociais do envelhecimento ativo numa perspetiva de género numa amostra de pessoas idosas. Metodologia: Planeamento de corte transversal. Foram inquiridas 123 pessoas idosas com uma média de 76,84 anos (DP: ±8,46). Utilizámos para aceder às evocações sobre o envelhecimento ativo o Teste de Associação Livre de Palavras e recorremos a um inquérito por questionário para caracterizar a nossa amostra. Resultados: As representações que emergiram com maior frequência são a “família”, “passeio”, “convívio” e “saúde”. Confirma-se que as prevalências estão associadas a conteúdos valorativos de âmbito positivo. O envelhecimento ativo, contrariando a imagem do envelhecimento, parece estar permeado por uma imagem positiva. Foi, ainda, possível destacar diferenças na representação do envelhecimento ativo a partir de um olhar genderizado. A evocação proeminente no sexo masculino ancora no desporto enquanto a evocação exclusiva do sexo feminino centra-se nas atividades domésticas. Conclusão: As relações interpessoais, nomeadamente as estabelecidas com a rede familiar, são centrais em várias fases do curso da vida. A prevalência da família é aqui demonstrada tanta para ambos os sexos. É consabido que na sociedade ocidental o estatuto social da mulher tem sofrido alterações. Contudo as mulheres da nossa amostra refletindo os papéis que assumiram ao longo da sua vida parecem refletir que um envelhecimento positivo associa-se à execução das tarefas que sempre fizeram, centrando-se muitas das suas evocações em conteúdos de cariz familista, onde o papel de cuidadoras se destaca. No caso dos homens a componente familista é também evocada emergindo concomitantemente atividades de lazer prazerosas. / Introduction: There is more and more people reaching proportionally the elderly ages. It is estimated that in 2025, there will exist around 1.2 billion people above sixty years old (WHO, 2002). The ageing of the population is one of the greatest challenges of the modern eras. For that same reason, the World Health Organization made the concept of active ageing part of its official discourse willing to show the importance of this life cycle stage. Objectives: The objective of this study is to analyze the social representations of active ageing in a gender perspective within a group of elderly people. Methodology: Planning a cross-sectional. A total 123 elderly people were surveyed with the average age of 76,84 years old (8.46 ± SD).We used to access the evocations of active ageing Test of Free Association of Words and resorted to a survey to characterize our sample. Results: The social representations that emerged most frequently are “family", "walk", "living" and "health." It is concluded that the preponderance of such terms are associated with positive evaluative content framework. Active ageing, contrary to the image of ageing, seems to be filled with a positive image. It was also possible to highlight differences in the representation of active aging from a gendered perspective. The prominent presence of males in sport as the female are exclusively in the domestic activities. Conclusions: The personal relations, mostly those established within the family, are very important during the different stages of a life time. The predominance of the family is shown in this study in both genders. IT is a known fact that in western civilizations the social status of women has been changing. Nevertheless, the female subjects in our study, demonstrate that for them, an active ageing resumes to the roles they have throughout their lives, mostly in their families, where they have a protective role. For men, the family component is also raised simultaneously emerging pleasurable and leisure activities.
