Thus, it is important to understand which variables sustain it. In this sense, the main objective of this study is to understand whether gender and socialrepresentations influence intimate partner violence.131 subjects from the general population were surveyed, of which 83 were female and48 were male. The participants were administered a sociodemographic questionnaire, the marital violence-stories questionnaire (QRVC-HIS), the gender role beliefs assessment scale (EACPG), the marital violence beliefs scale (ECVC) and, finally, the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (MCSDS).The results obtained in this study demonstrate that there is greater legitimation of violence by men towards women, as equality of averages wasn’t observed for both genders. Furthermore, gender proves to be a predictive variable with regard to the answers given to the Stories Questionnaire.Education is a good predictor regarding the QRVC-HIS. However, this is not observed in Story 3.Regarding social desirability, it is not significant in the response to the QRVC-HIS, which means that we can hypothesize that respondents are less influenced by beliefs rooted in society.Therefore, this study shows the importance of continuing to study this issue. Furthermore, its necessary to continue to transform the representations that individuals may have regarding this topic so that its prevalence begins to decrease in the future.A temática da violência entre parceiros íntimos ainda se encontra em estudo devido às suas diversas consequências na sociedade, quer passadas quer atuais. Assim, é importante perceber quais as variáveis que a sustentam.Neste sentido, o presente estudo apresenta como principal objetivo compreender se o género e as representações sociais influenciam a violência entre parceiros íntimos.Foram inquiridos 131 sujeitos da população geral sendo que destes 83 são do género feminino e 48 do género masculino. Aos participantes foi-lhes administrado um questionário sociodemográfico, o questionário de violência conjugal-histórias (QRVC-HIS), a escala de avaliação de crenças nos papéis de género (EACPG) a escala de crenças sobre violência conjugal (ECVC) e, por fim, a escala de desejabilidade social de Marlowe-Crowne (MCSDS).Os resultados obtidos neste estudo demonstram que há uma maior legitimação da violência por parte do género masculino para com as mulheres, visto não se ter observado igualdade das médias para ambos os géneros. Além disso, o género demonstra ser uma variável preditora no que diz respeito às respostas dadas ao questionário das Histórias.A escolaridade é uma boa preditora no que concerne ao QRVC-HIS. Contudo, tal não é observado na História 3, do mesmo questionário.Relativamente à desejabilidade social, esta não apresenta significância na resposta ao QRVC-HIS, o que podemos hipotetizar que os respondentes são menos influenciados pelas crenças enraizadas na sociedade.Assim sendo, este estudo mostra a importância de continuar a estudar esta problemática.
