Num primeiro momento, são historiadas as relações entre os movimentos anarquistas dos dois países - convocando debates coevos em torno de princípios como a solidariedade e o internacionalismo -, não sendo ignoradas as especificidades das respetivas conjunturas. De seguida, o enfoque recai sobre os anos de atividade da F.A.I., refletindo-se acerca do contexto que ditou a sua formação e mapeando-se o caminho que, finalmente, ditaria o seu ocaso, bem como o de todo o movimento libertário peninsular. Marcada que foi pela sua participação na Guerra Civil espanhola, muita da historiografia que se debruçou sobre a F.A.I. tende a ignorar a dimensão transnacional que esteve no seu gérmen. Ainda que de forma sumária e fragmentária, preencher essa lacuna pode contribuir para aprofundar significativamente a história do anarquismo peninsular. Para além de na sua formação terem estado envolvidos os principais vultos dos movimentos libertários de ambos os lados da fronteira, os debates tidos no seio da F.A.I. tornam-se indispensáveis para compreender a evolução das estratégias adotadas pelos anarquistas ibéricos perante conjunturas progressivamente mais repressivas. Contrariando um nacionalismo metodológico, particularmente danoso quando aplicado a movimentos com um carácter iminentemente internacionalista e anti-estatal, este artigo pretende destacar o lugar da F.A.I. simultaneamente enquanto solução de recurso e ideal internacionalista. This article explores the Iberist character of the Anarchist Iberian Federation (F.A.I.) and of the Portuguese and Spanish libertarian thinking during the 1920’s and 1930’s. Initially, we record the relations between the anarchist movements in both countries – resorting to debates around the principles of solidarity and internationalism – while also considering the particularities of their respective conjunctures. We then turn our focus to the years of the F.A.I., reflecting on the context that brought it about and mapping the path that lead to its dissolution. Marked by its participation in the Spanish Civil War, most historians tend to ignore F.A.I.’s transnational dimension. Filling that gap can contribute to a significant deepening of the history on the Iberian anarchist movement. Besides having involved the most notorious figures of the libertarian movements on both sides of the border in its formation, the debates that took place in the F.A.I. prove indispensable to understand the strategies adopted in the context of increasingly repressive scenarios.
