A reflexão tem como ponto de partida uma descrição dos parâmetros atuais do ensino da língua portuguesa nesse país. Baseado num questionário aplicado a uma amostra de cerca de 100 respondentes, o estudo considera um conjunto de dimensões do objeto de estudo. As entidades envolvidas neste estudo dão grande importância à língua portuguesa, tendo o governo de Timor-Leste optado por elegê-la como língua oficial do país, o que fez com que, simultaneamente, esta viesse a representar a identidade nacional, e isto tem vindo a ser confirmado através das opiniões recolhidas no campo da investigação. Entretanto, considerando o potencial geopolítico da língua portuguesa para Timor-Leste, a opção pela língua portuguesa foi sem dúvida uma opção corajosa e vitoriosa, e que vai no sentido de ajudar a combater o isolamento político de Timor- Leste face às duas potências regionais, a Indonésia e a Austrália. A adesão de Timor-Leste à CPLP, e a presidência da mesma durante o período de 2014 até 2016, fixaram quatro objetivos principais: representação dos interesses comuns da organização no contexto da Ásia-Pacífico; alargar a concertação políticodiplomática, particularmente no âmbito das organizações internacionais, para dar expressão crescente na cena regional aos interesses e necessidades comuns; reforçar a cooperação bi-e multilateral, especialmente nos domínios económico, social, cultural, jurídico e técnico-científico; incentivar a difusão e enriquecimento da língua portuguesa de modo a assegurar a sua acrescida afirmação internacional. A língua, como elemento unificador, exerce um forte impacto nas economias a vários níveis, nomeadamente, na dinamização das trocas comerciais, na promoção da globalização empresarial, no desenvolvimento das relações políticas e sociais, no intercâmbio de ideias e no fluxo de pessoas. Podemos considerar que a língua portuguesa tem potencial geopolítico não só para Timor-Leste, em particular no contexto regional em que Timor-Leste está inserido.The present work pretends to reflect on and understand the perspective of politicians, academicians, representatives of the Catholic Church and of the civil society on the geopolitical potential of the Portuguese language for East Timor. The reflection starts by describing the actual parameters of the teaching of the Portuguese language in that nation. Based on a questionnaire applied to a sample of 100 people, the study considers a number of dimensions about the object of study. Those involved in this study recognize the importance of the Portuguese language, as the Government of East Timor opted for this language as the official language of the country, which at the same time represents our national identity, and this facts are confirmed throughout the opinions expressed on the research. However, addressing the geopolitical potential of the Portuguese language for East Timor, no doubt that the choice of the Portuguese language was a bold and successful move in order to drive the country away from political isolation in face of the two regional powers, Indonesia and Australia. The accession of East Timor to the CPLP, and its presidency between the years of 2014 and 2016, brings forward four main objectives: to represent the common interests of the organization in the context of Asia and the Pacific; to expand political and diplomatic coordination, particularly within international organizations, and thus, increasingly, to give expression in the regional scene to the common interests and needs; to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation, especially in the economic, social, cultural, legal, technical and scientific fields; and to boost the dissemination and enrichment of the Portuguese language in order to ensure its international standing. The language, as unifying feature, has a strong impact on the economies at various levels, particularly in boosting trade, in promoting corporate globalization, the development of political and social relations, the exchange of ideas, and the flow of people.
