Estudo de prevalência de carcinomas de células escamosas oculares em bovinos de aptidão leiteira da ilha de São Miguel, Açores, Portugal

O carcinoma de células escamosas (CCE) ocular é das neoplasias mais importantes em bovinicultura, tanto pelo impacto negativo na saúde e bem-estar dos animais como na produtividade destes. Na sequência da observação de considerável número de casos clínicos de neoformações oculares no decorrer do estágio curricular, decidiu-se realizar um estudo com objetivo de caraterizar histologicamente estas lesões, estimar a prevalência e identificar possíveis fatores que justifiquem a elevada ocorrência. Este estudo teve por base a recolha de amostras de neoformações oculares de bovinos da ilha de São Miguel (entre novembro de 2021 e abril de 2022) e a aplicação de inquéritos aos respetivos detentores. Integraram este estudo 25 amostras de neoformações oculares, das quais 20 foram classificadas como CCE. A frequência relativa de CCE em relação ao total de neoplasias identificadas fixou-se em 95,2%. Estimou-se uma prevalência de CCE ocular em bovinos da ilha de São Miguel de aproximadamente 1,5%; - Prevalence study of ocular squamous cell carcinomas in dairy cattle on the island of São Miguel, Azores, Portugal ABSTRACT: The ocular squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) are one of the most significant neoplasms in cattle farming, both due to the negative impact on animal health and well-being as well as their productivity. Following the observation of a considerable number of clinical cases of ocular neoformations during the curricular internship, it was decided to carry out a study with the aim of histologically characterizing these lesions, estimating their prevalence and identifying possible factors that justify their high occurrence. This study was based on the collection of samples of ocular neoformations from cattle on the island of São Miguel (between November 2021 and April 2022) and the application of surveys to their respective owners. This study included 25 samples of ocular neoformations, of which 20 were classified as SCC. The relative frequency of SCC in relation to the total number of identified neoplasms was 95,2%. The prevalence of ocular SCC in cattle on the island of São Miguel was estimated to be approximately 1,5%.
