Condoms are the only contraceptive method capable of avoiding these two risks simultaneously and continue to be the method of choice for most young people, although at European level there is a downward trend in their use. The main aim of this study is therefore to characterize the sexual habits and contraceptive practices of the Portuguese university population. A cross-sectional study was carried out in which 198 university students answered a questionnaire about their sexual habits and contraceptive use. They were assessed on their level of knowledge about condom use, frequency of use of condoms and other contraceptive methods, and degree of comfort with condom use situations. 66.7% (n=132) of the students admitted to being well informed about condom use, but 61.1% (n=121) revealed that they did not use this contraceptive method in all sexual relations, with men reporting a higher frequency of regular use than women (46.7% versus 35.3%). The overall level of knowledge about condom use was high, with an average of 6.7 correct answers out of 7. Most students were extremely comfortable discussing condom use with their sexual partner before intercourse. Young university students in a romantic relationship showed a lower frequency of condom use and a higher degree of comfort with unprotected sex compared to their peers without a current relationship. There were no significant differences between genders and area of education for the other variables analysed. We concluded that there is a large proportion of the student population that does not use condoms in all sexual relations, and this fact is exacerbated in young people who are in romantic relationships. Although overall knowledge about condom use is high, it is essential that, in the future, campaigns and measures are developed to promote healthy sexual habits and facilitate access to condoms for university students.A adolescência e início da vida adulta é um período de maior suscetibilidade a riscos relacionados com a atividade sexual, sejam eles infeções sexualmente transmissíveis ou gravidez indesejada. O preservativo é o único método contracetivo capaz de evitar estes dois riscos simultaneamente, e continua a ser o método de eleição para a maioria dos jovens, contudo a nível europeu verifica-se uma tendência decrescente no seu uso. Deste modo, o presente estudo tem como objetivo principal caraterizar os hábitos sexuais e práticas contracetivas da população universitária portuguesa. Realizou-se um estudo transversal, onde 198 estudantes universitários responderam a um questionário relativamente aos seus hábitos sexuais e de uso de contracetivo. Foram avaliados quanto ao seu grau de conhecimento acerca do uso de preservativo, frequência do seu uso e de outros métodos contracetivos, e grau de conforto perante situações particulares de uso de preservativo. 66.7% (n=132) dos estudantes admitiram estar bastante informados quanto ao uso do preservativo, mas 61.1% (n=121) revelou não usar este método contracetivo em todas as relações sexuais, sendo que os homens relataram maior frequência de uso regular que as mulheres (46.7% versus 35.3%). O grau global de conhecimento sobre o uso de preservativo foi elevado, com uma média de 6.7 respostas acertadas em 7. A maioria dos estudantes revelou-se extremamente confortável em discutir o uso de preservativo com o seu parceiro sexual antes das relações. Os jovens universitários numa relação amorosa revelaram menor frequência de uso de preservativo e maior grau de conforto perante relações sexuais desprotegidas face aos seus pares sem relacionamento atual. Não houve diferenças significativas entre os géneros e área do curso de ensino superior para as restantes variáveis analisadas. Concluímos que existe uma grande parte da população de estudantes que não faz uso do preservativo em todas as relações sexuais, e que este facto se agrava nos jovens que se encontram em relações amorosas.
