Estas alterações destabilizam o agregado familiar no qual o doente está inserido, daí a necessidade de estudos não só no modo como a doença afeta o doente, mas também toda a família.Os objetivos deste artigo prendem-se com a análise do seio familiar perante a nova realidade e a adaptação ao diagnóstico de esquizofrenia e o modo como a abordagem familiar através de intervenções específicas, em associação com a medicação antipsicótica, consegue modelar o curso da doença. Serão aprofundamos os efeitos na família do diagnóstico de doença mental de esquizofrenia. Serão abordados os comportamentos mal-adaptativos dos cuidadores, os níveis emocionais elevados presentes na atmosfera familiar e a sobrecarga, assim como a influência positiva da doença nos cuidadores.As taxas de recaídas de doentes com esquizofrenia apenas com medicação reconhecem a necessidade de auxílio com outras ferramentas, nomeadamente através da intervenção familiar. A psicoeducação com um papel ativo no tratamento da doença pretende auxiliar e orientar a família ao longo de todo o percurso com vista a melhorias do funcionamento do indivíduo na família e sociedade. Saberemos indicar os modelos com melhores outcomes e quais os parâmetros de maior relevo para melhor prognóstico da esquizofrenia.Nesse sentido é necessário sensibilidade e reconhecimento de que cada família é única e que cada contexto cultural interfere na perceção de doença e consequente na relação com ela ao longo do trajeto de tratamento. Daí a relevância da necessidade de uma aplicação de abordagens estruturadas e adaptadas.Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that translates into changes in patient´s thoughts an behavior. This impacts on the functioning of the individual and with that the entire household in which the patient is inserted. More studies are needed to know how the disease affects, not only the patient, but also the whole family.In this article we aim to analyze the family and how they face the new reality, how they adapt to the new diagnosis as well as the best family´s approach in an association program of antipsychotic medication with family interventions.We will analyzed the effects of the diagnosis of schizophrenia on the family. Those effects include maladaptive behaviors, high emotional levels and family burden. The positive influence of the disease on caregivers will be described, as well.Relapse rates of schizophrenia patients, with medication only, recognize the need for further approaches, including family intervention. Psychoeducation, with an active role in the treatment of the disease, aims to assist and guide the family throughout the course of the illness and to improve the functioning of the individual in the family and in the society. It will be indicated the best models outcomes and which are the most important parameters for a better prognosis of schizophrenia.The sensitivity and recognition that each family is unique and that the cultural context interferes in the perception of schizophrenia is important.
