Summary: This paper presents the first open-source implementation of an automatic process for the syllabification of Portuguese. To accomplish this, two approaches were adopted, implemented and compared: a rule-based and a machine learning one. The resulting tool is made freely available as an open-source software and as a free online linguistic service.
