Summary: Starting from the undertanding of the degrowth movement as a broad ideological coalition against economic growth and inequity, this paper critically analyzes the pitfalls of sustainable development and the potentials of an architecture of degrowth. The paper subsequently articulates the necessity of a radical reform of current capitalist practices to attain ecological and social sustainability. The paper culminates with the author’s proposed degrowth architectural framework which highlights spatial strategies, regulations, and best practices for engendering a degrowth political economy. This degrowth urbanism ultimately strives to achieve tangible climate mitigation and adaptation as well as inspire a cultural paradigm shift towards decreased consumption and increased equality.
