A criação de Bracara Augusta e da rede de itinerários principais implicou uma redefinição dos eixos estruturadores do povoamento entre os quais se destaca a criação de um número considerável de aglomerados secundários, que parecem obedecer a uma articulação clara com a rede viária, e a presença de novas formas de exploração da terra, representadas pelas villae. A extensa e heterogénea base de informação relativa a vestígios arqueológicos da Idade do Ferro e romanos, levou-nos a avançar para outras demarcações espaciais. Nesse sentido, seleccionámos um transepto que corta a região do amplo “anfiteatro minhoto” em três subunidades de análise: a área em torno de Bracara Augusta, a região de montanha atravessada pela Via XVIII e uma terceira subunidade que inclui a região de vale e litoral entre os rios Neiva e Este. A rarefacção do povoamento e a sua clara articulação com a Via XVIII constituem os pontos a salientar na análise efectuada para a região de montanha. Na região de vale e litoral importa salientar a clara distinção entre a mancha densa de vestígios arqueológicos da região de vale relativamente a uma mancha espaçada e rarefeita de povoados na orla costeira. Finalmente verifica-se uma forte densidade de povoamento em torno de Bracara Augusta, e a presença de um cadastro romano que se organiza segundo uma modulação de 20x20 actus.This work aims at characterizing settlement patterns in the ‘Entre-Douro-and-Minho’ region, beginning with a large and synthetic analysis of the changes launched by the Roman conquest in Northwest Iberia. The creation of Bracara Augusta and the main road network led to a redefinition of the settlement structuring axes, among which are the creation of a some secondary settlements. The archaeological data at our disposal allows us to locate some small towns, which appear closely connected with the road network. Among the very considerable archaeological data at our disposal indicating roman sites we would like to emphasize the presence of the roman villae. Finally, the continuity of some of Iron Age hillforts in the roman period seems to be connected with the control of the territory, with road network and the valleys. The background material that we have for this region (more than a thousand two hundred sites), the diversity of settlement and the variety of studies produced and published have required different scales of analysis. We decided to make a transection which cuts the region. This transverse section obeys to the following three criteria: geomorphologic diversity; archaeological data and, of course, the presence of Bracara Augusta. In this transect we analysed three areas with greater detail: the region around Bracara Augusta; the region of the mountain with a settlement pattern organised by the Flavian Roman road and finally, the last zoom, the valley and coastal area. In the region of the mountain we would like to emphasize the gradual rarefaction of settling as we move towards higher altitudes and the implementation of sites directly connected with the road. In the valley and coastal there is a distinctive difference between the settling pattern in the valley and near the coast. Density and dispersal are the features of settlement in the valley; the coastal area is scarcely occupied with some settlements of the Iron Age and some villae, apparently associated with salt-making or fish products. Finally, wee can see a density of Roman occupation around Bracara Augusta. While analysing this region, we started studying the organization of the rural landscape, in order to verify a centuriated area. We confirm this idea.
