Sintomatologia associada à erupção dentária: uma perspetiva atual no âmbito da odontopediatria

Introdução: a erupção dentária consiste num processo fisiológico e compreende toda a movimentação realizada pelo dente durante a sua formação até este atingir a sua posição funcional na cavidade oral. Durante este período de erupção dos dentes decíduos, é comum o relato de sintomatologia como a febre, irritabilidade, diarreia, sialorreia, falta de apetite entre outros. Todo este processo da erupção dentária, constitui um período marcante na vida da criança trazendo implicações para os que lidam diretamente com a sua saúde: pais, médico pediatra e médico dentista. Estes profissionais de saúde não devem deixar de dar importância à sintomatologia sistémica que a criança pode apresentar, pois esta, pode de certo modo constituir um alerta para algumas doenças mais graves que poderão ocorrer durante esse mesmo período. Objectivo: o objetivo do presente trabalho consiste em perceber se se mantém a controvérsia descrita na literatura em relação a esta associação ou, se atualmente, existem estudos que permitam esclarecer este mesmo assunto. Material e Métodos: para a realização desta revisão bibliográfica, realizou-se uma pesquisa em bases de dados como a PubMed e B-on, com as seguintes palavras-chave: teething, teething symptoms, teething remedies, tooth eruption, signs and symptoms, tooth deciduous, manifestations and tooth eruption. Conclusão: a relação entre a erupção dentária e o aparecimento de sintomatologia associada a esta, tem sido estudada ao longo do tempo. De acordo com a literatura, este é um assunto polémico entre os profissionais de saúde e também na perceção dos pais, existindo por isso a necessidade de se efetuarem mais estudos científicos que permitam desmistificar esta associação. Introduction: tooth eruption is a physiological process that comprises all the movements made by the tooth from their formation until ones reach their functional position in the oral cavity. During this period of primary tooth eruption, it is common to report symptoms like fever, irritability, diarrhea, drooling, and loss of appetite among others. This whole process of tooth eruption is an important period in a child's life bringing implications for all the ones that deal with their health: such as parents, paediatrician and dentists. Such health professionals shall not neglect the systemic symptomatology that children may present, since it can constitute an alert for other serious diseases that might be occurring during this period. Objective: the purpose of this paper is to understand if the controversy exposed in the literature about this association remains or, if current studies clarify this very subject. Materials and Methods: to carry out this literature review, it was made a search in databases such as PubMed and B-on using keywords as: teething, teething symptoms, teething remedies, tooth eruption, signs and symptoms, tooth deciduous, manifestations and tooth eruption. Conclusion: the relation between tooth eruption and teething appearing as been widely investigated. According to literature reports, this is a polemic matter among health professionals and also in the parents perception, therefore, there is a need for more scientific studies to try to demystify this association.
