Movimentos perpétuos is a documentary tribute to Carlos Paredes directed by Edgar Pêra. The concept of movement —which gives its title to the album Movimento perpétuo (Paredes, 1971)— unites the artistic praxis of both authors. Edgar Pêra uses sound recordings, interviews, photographs and newspaper clippings, as well as images of daily life in the cities of Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra, giving us back his perspective of Carlos Paredes’ life and work. It is an aesthetic object that, by the characteristics that we expose throughout this text, is configured not only as a meta-hybrid (which defines it as a transcultural product), but also materializes Dewey’s philosophy (the experience and the other at the base of artistic activity) and embodies the theoretical position of James Carey, namely, ritual communication (and the conversation that underlies it) as a process from which emanate the symbolic exchanges that build social relationships.
