Depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress in patients with colorectal cancer: Validation of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Impact of Events Scale (IES) in a sample of cancer patients

The purpose of this study was the adaptation of the “Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale” (Zigmond & Snaith, 1993) and the “Impact of Events Scale” (Weiss & Marmer, 1977) and simultaneously to assess the surgery, surgery/chemotherapy and surgery/radiotherapy in patients with colorectal cancer in terms of depression, anxiety and pos-traumatic stress. The sample includes 114 patients with colorectal diagnosis. Data was collected in Instituto Português de Oncologia. In terms of psychometric properties, the Portuguese versions of HADS and IES in our sample show a good internal consistency with a cronbach alpha of .94 and .90 respectively. In terms of validity, the adapted version of HADS keeps the original structure but the adapted version of IES has one item less. The results show an increase in depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress in patients with colorectal cancer that were submitted to surgery/chemotherapy and surgery/radiotherapy when compared with those that were only submitted to surgery and those that have an ostomy.
