To give a break: community and subject within the context of drug dealing

Within the context of drug dealing, in which dealers are shown to have largely internalised the values condemning dealing, we witness the appearance of collective representations that facilitate both the activity itself, and the joining of new actors. This article proves that such representations cannot be understood by assuming the existence of a «delinquency sub-cultural complex», based on alternative values transmitted within a closed environment. What is suggested in its place is a process-oriented conception of «collective illegal activity» and «delinquent subject». It is argued that, firstly, these representations are created in interactive contexts, always based on dominant values, namely the value of «not-dealing». Secondly, that the presence of these representations in the participants' socialisation process is experienced in a contextual and contradictory manner, in relation to their notion of selfhood.
