It is widely recognized that the quality of life in urban areas is often lower than in rural areas, largely due to limited access to nature. This disparity was further emphasized during the pandemic, which underscored the importance of accessible outdoor spaces in cities. Urban green spaces not only improve individual well-being but also mitigate environmental issues such as pollution and the heat island effect. Consequently, urban planners and governments face the challenge of developing sustainable cities. Given the lack of a standardized global approach, this research introduces a new method to analyze the supply and demand balance of urban green spaces in Lisbon. Using the InVEST Urban Nature Access model developed by the Natural Capital Project, this study offers a flexible approach to urban nature management by providing easily obtainable information. In Lisbon, only 32% of subsections do not have at least 9 m2 of urban green spaces per capita. The young population group accounts for 83% of subsections with a positive supply-demand balance of green spaces, properly satisfying these individuals needs, while the older population group only meets the 9 m2 target in 4% of the subsections. The findings highlight the need for targeted interventions in southeastern Lisbon to ensure equitable access to green spaces, particularly for the older population, who face a significant deficit in urban green spaces.
