A institucionalização: estudo da percepção das crianças e adolescentes que vivem num Lar de Infânia e Juventude

O presente estudo procura analisar as percepções de crianças e adolescentes residentes num Lar de Infância e Juventude acerca do funcionamento do mesmo, bem como comparar os dois grupos da investigação. Cada um destes grupos é constituído por 8 elementos do sexo masculino, divididos em função de idade, existindo um grupo de adolescentes com idades compreendidas entre os 14 e os 17 anos, que frequentam o 3º Ciclo de ensino básico e outro grupo com crianças entre os 9 e 11 anos de idade, que frequentam o 1º Ciclo de ensino obrigatório. Para concretização do estudo usou-se o método focus groups implementando uma sessão em ambos os grupos. Após o tratamento dos dados através de matrizes conceptuais de análise de conteúdo, e posteriormente da sua análise e discussão dos resultados, pôde verificar-se no que concerne à percepção geral da instituição que as crianças apresentam uma percepção mais negativa pelo facto de estarem institucionalizados, revelando que sentem falta dos seus familiares. Por outro lado, os adolescentes apresentam uma percepção da instituição mais positiva salientando a necessidade de adquirirem competências para o futuro. Contudo, os participantes do 3º Ciclo apresentam descontentamento no que se refere às regras implementadas pela instituição, salientando ao facto das mesmas não serem flexíveis. Pode verificar-se também que as percepções das crianças cingem-se mais a factores individuais enquanto os adolescentes salientam a importância do seu desenvolvimento social estando mais voltados para questões do grupo e para um funcionamento adequado da instituição desenvolvendo o seu espírito crítico. As categorias mais abordadas pelos participantes em ambos os grupos foram as regras e a higiene. Por outro lado, os adolescentes desenvolveram mais temáticas comparativamente com as crianças. This study seeks to analyze the children and adolescent perceptions about the functioning of the child and youth shelter institution they live in, as well as compare both the groups of this research. Each of these groups is composed by eight male elements divided according to their age. One group is composed by adolescents, aged between 14 and 17, all attending the 3rd Cycle of the basic education. The other group has children from 9 to 11 years old, and they attend 1st Cycle of the mandatory education. The focus group method was chosen to operationalize this study and was implemented in the session with both groups. After data processing, according to conceptual analytical content matrixes and subsequent analysis and discussion of the results, it can be stated that, in regard to the general perception of the institution, the children have a more negative perception because they are institutionalized, revealing that they miss their families. On the other hand, the adolescents have a more positive perception of the institution giving importance to the need to acquire skills for the future. However, participants of the 3rd Cycle show dissatisfaction regarding the rules implemented by the institution, highlighting that they are not flexible. It was also possible to conclude that the children percept themselves more in individual factors, opposite to the teenagers that stress the importance of their social development, being more concerned with issues of the group and about the proper functioning of the institution, by this way their critical thinking. The categories most discussed by participants in both groups were the rules and hygiene. However, adolescents have developed a broader field of subjects in comparison with the children.
