Mickey Sabbath: A pulsão de morte e o desligamento num personagem literário

A literatura é um meio privilegiado para perscrutar as lógicas de pensamento e conduta humanas. Este exercício procura analisar os processos psíquicos de um personagem literário, Mickey Sabbath, a personagem principal da obra de Philip Roth O Teatro de Sabbath, à luz de um dos pilares teóricos do edifício teórico freudiano: o conceito da Pulsão de Morte. Surgido pela primeira vez em 1920 no famigerado artigo de Freud Além do Princípio do Prazer, apontamos como este conceito foi revisto e reinterpretado por autores como Jean Laplanche e André Green, ao longo do tempo e da constante reinvenção teórica psicanalítica. Através de uma grelha de análise interpretativa criada como uma extensão de uma metodologia preexistente – o método- -T.A.T. – procuramos ter acesso a indicadores sobre a organização mental da personagem em estudo. Seleccionando cinco excertos da obra, estudamos os principais procedimentos e problemáticas psíquicos evidenciados pelo discurso da personagem. Finalmente, é proposta uma análise da personagem seguindo a lógica do conceito já referido da Pulsão de Morte. ABSTRACT Literature provides a powerful overview into the nature of human thought and conduct. Here, the traits of a literary character, Mickey Sabbath, from Philip Roth’s novel The Sabbath’s Theater, are analyzed in view of one of the main theoritical formulations of the freudian theory: the Death Drive. A new interpretative analytical grid, based on the T.A.T.-process, is introduced to establish indicators of the character’s mental organization and five excerpts of the novel are analyzed to characterize the main mental processes and problematical aspects underlying the character’s discourse. Introduced for the first time in Freud’s Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920), the Death Drive concept has gathered the attention of several generations of psychoanalytical authors, most notably that of Jean Laplanche and Andre Green. As a final point, the character is analyzed under the light of the Death Drive concept.
