Summary: Using self-report questionnaire data from high school students (N=1152) in Aveiro region, this study examined several familial factors related to adolescent cannabis and alcohol use. Alcohol and cannabis use were highly related to familial variables such as perceived quality of the relationship with parents, perceived child rearing practices and perceived parents' attitudes towards alcohol. Interactions were found indicating, for example, that marijuana using girls were characterized by having more negative perceptions of the relationship with their fathers than with their male counterparts.
