Summary: Along with António Ferro, Almada Negreiros was one of the few artists of the first portuguese Modernist movement who was truly and deeply interested in cinema, so that he wrote some really important essays about it. Considering those essays, as well as Almada's several collaborations with the cinematographic industry, this paper will evaluate the cinematic significance of some of his fictional and poetical works. Theoretically, it will be based upon a historical viewpoint that will focus on the coincidence between the birth of cinema as a new mode of representing pictures, and Psychanalysis as a new descriptive method concerning mental images.
