Um dos maiores desafios diários que a Pessoa com Diabetes enfrenta na gestão da doença é a alimentação e, para isso, contribui uma baixa literacia em saúde. Para uma melhor autogestão da doença é necessário capacitar a Pessoa com Diabetes para uma melhor nutrição. Contribuem para uma boa capacitação, os materiais informativos acessíveis e de fácil compreensão. Este estudo pretende, assim, dar início a um processo de construção de material informativo (livro), sobre nutrição na Diabetes, validando um capítulo desse livro num estudo-piloto.Métodos: Foi elaborado um texto com base nos resultados de estudo qualitativo prévio. O conteúdo do texto foi revisto por uma equipa multidisciplinar: Enfermeiro, Médico de Família, Nutricionista, Pessoa com Diabetes, Jornalista, Perito de Comunicação em Saúde e Perito de Língua Portuguesa e foi elaborado o seu grafismo. Foi calculada a inteligibilidade nas várias fases de revisão pela Fórmula de Flesh, adaptada para português. Foi avaliado o capítulo final quanto à sua qualidade e adequabilidade com recurso à grelha de avaliação Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM). No final, foi pedido a Profissionais de Saúde e Pessoas com Diabetes Tipo 2 que, após leitura do capítulo, avaliassem o seu grau de satisfação quanto ao mesmo, através de dois questionários, um dirigido a Profissionais de Saúde e outro dirigido a Pessoas com Diabetes Tipo 2, ambos com uma escala de Satisfação tipo Likert de 0 a 10 e uma questão aberta para opiniões e/ou sugestões.Resultados: O Índice de Flesh do capítulo na versão final foi de 56,18, com uma inteligibilidade em anos de escolaridade correspondente ao 2º/3 ciclo do Ensino Básico (9ºano). A avaliação global da qualidade e adequação do conteúdo foi de 74,1% o que corresponde ao nível de adequado da grelha de avaliação Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM). Em termos de satisfação, 40,9% dos Profissionais de Saúde ficaram totalmente satisfeitos e a maioria (76,9%) das Pessoas com Diabetes Tipo 2 também. Na questão aberta foram dadas sugestões, principalmente ao nível do excesso de texto e pouco uso de imagens. Resultou deste processo de construção e validação o 1º capítulo composto por seis páginas, que integrará um livro sobre Alimentação e Diabetes. Discussão: A validação do capítulo seguiu um processo estruturado, mas não atingiu o grau de inteligibilidade pretendido e adequado à escolaridade média do público-alvo. O cálculo da inteligibilidade foi feito pela fórmula de Flesh adaptada para português do brasil, o que requer cuidado na interpretação dos dados obtidos. Na grelha de avaliação Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM) o material informativo foi considerado adequado com uma pontuação percentual de 71,4%. Há melhorias a fazer nos capítulos futuros no sentido de conseguir uma pontuação mais elevada e melhoria global do material informativo. Em termos de satisfação, a maioria dos participantes das duas amostras ficou totalmente satisfeita e foram dadas sugestões pertinentes, que são um contributo para a melhoria do capítulo em estudo, mas também para futuros estudos nesta área. Conclusão: Este estudo desenvolveu um capítulo globalmente aceitável informativo na área da alimentação dirigido a Diabéticos Tipo 2, com temas que tanto Profissionais de Saúde como Pessoas com Diabetes Tipos 2 consideram essenciais para uma melhor capacitação dos diabéticos na área da alimentação, com vista à melhoria da sua saúde global. Será pertinente dar continuidade a este estudo com a construção de outros capítulos para integrar num livro final. Todos os processos de validação seguiram o que está recomendado para materiais informativos em saúde, contudo faltam ferramentas para o cálculo de inteligibilidade e avaliação da qualidade validadas para o idioma e cultura portuguesa, de forma a se obterem resultados mais ajustados à população portuguesa.Introduction: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease with a high incidence and prevalence. One of the biggest daily challenges that the People with Diabetes faces in managing the disease is nutrition, and low health literacy contributes to this. For better self-management of the disease, it is necessary to empower the People with Diabetes for a better nutrition. Information materials that are accessible and easy to understand contribute to a good training. Thus, this study intends to start a process of construction of informative material (book) on nutrition in Diabetes, validating a chapter of this book.Methods: A text was developed based on the results of a previous qualitative study. The content of the text was reviewed by a multidisciplinary team: family doctors, nurses, and nutritionists. People with Diabetes, Journalist, Health Communication Expert, and Portuguese Language Expert, and drafted its graphics. Intelligibility at the various stages of review was calculated using Flesh's Formula, adapted for Portuguese. The final chapter was assessed for quality and adequacy using the Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM) evaluation grid. At the end, Healthcare Professionals and People with Type 2 Diabetes were asked to evaluate their satisfaction with the chapter through two questionnaires, one for Healthcare Professionals and another for People with Type 2 Diabetes, both with a Likert-type satisfaction scale from 0 to 10 and an open question for opinions and/or suggestions.Results: The Flesh Index of the chapter in the final version was 56.18, with an intelligibility in school years corresponding to the 2nd/3rd cycle of Basic Education (9th grade). The global evaluation of the quality and adequacy of the content was 74.1%, which corresponds to the level of adequate in the Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM) evaluation grid. In terms of satisfaction, 40.9% of the Healthcare Professionals were totally satisfied and the majority (76.9%) of the People with Type 2 Diabetes were also satisfied. In the open question, suggestions were given, mainly regarding excessive text and little use of images. The result of this construction and validation process was the first chapter, composed of six pages, which will be part of a book on Diet and Diabetes.Discussion: Although a structured validation process was followed, the final pilot chapter did not reach the intelligibility level intended and adequate to the average schooling of the target audience. Intelligibility was calculated using Flesh's formula adapted for Brazilian Portuguese, which required care in interpreting the data obtained. In the Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM) evaluation grid, the information material was considered adequate with a percentage score of 71.4%. There are improvements to be made in future chapters towards achieving a higher score and overall improvement of the information material. In terms of satisfaction, most of the participants in both samples were totally satisfied and pertinent suggestions were given, which are a contribution for the improvement of the chapter under study, but also for future studies in this area.Conclusion: This study has developed a globally acceptable informative chapter in diet directed at Type 2 Diabetics, with the topics that both Health Professionals and People with Type 2 Diabetes consider essential for a better empowerment of diabetics in diet, with a view to improving their overall health. It will be pertinent to continue this study with the construction of other chapters to be integrated into a final book.
