Summary: This work aims to analyze the relationship between the creation of Facebook in the 2000s and American power in the 21st century. Through qualitative research and data checking, it was sought to understand the development of the relation of Facebook with American soft power, especially when concerning the agenda of democratic promotion in the world, and how this same social network came to allow the use of sharp power against the United States. Accordingly, it will be observed through two descriptive studies: Facebook as American soft power in the Arab Spring; and Facebook as Russian sharp power in the 2016 US elections. This research found that Facebook was part of a narrative about American soft power in the Arab Spring and that it was later exploited by Russian sharp power to affect the 2016 US elections.

Por meio de uma pesquisa qualitativa acompanhada de dados busca-se compreender o desenvolvimento do Facebook como útil ao soft power estadunidense, principalmente no que tange a agenda de promoção democrática no mundo, e como essa mesma rede social veio a permitir o emprego de sharp power contra os Estados Unidos. Em função disso, será observado por meio de dois estudos descritivos: o Facebook como soft power estadunidense na Primavera Árabe; e o Facebook como sharp power russo nas eleições estadunidenses de 2016.
