Summary: There is an increasing understanding of the need for early integration of palliative care in the context of oncology, which could contribute to improve the clinical outcomes and promoting quality of life for the rising number of patients living and dying with the disease. Effective symptom control is a key part of providing effective care for these patients, promoting quality of life, reducing the harmful effects of the disease, and restoring functionality for as long as possible. Amidst the scenario of suffering and precariousness of patients living in the slums of Rocinha and Vidigal, in Rio de Janeiro, “Favela Compassiva” emerges as a driving force combined with public health and the residents themselves, to offer quality of life and a dignified death to patients with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

El control eficaz de los síntomas es una parte clave para brindar una atención eficaz a estos pacientes, promover la calidad de vida, reducir los efectos nocivos de la enfermedad y restaurar la funcionalidad durante el mayor tiempo posible. En medio del escenario de sufrimiento y precariedad de los pacientes que viven en las favelas de Rocinha y Vidigal, en Río de Janeiro, “Favela Compassiva” surge como un motor unido a la salud pública y a los propios vecinos, para ofrecer calidad de vida y una muerte digna a pacientes con cáncer y otras enfermedades potencialmente mortales.É crescente o entendimento acerca da necessidade de integração precoce do cuidado paliativo no contexto da oncologia, o que poderia contribuir para a melhoria dos desfechos clínicos e a promoção de qualidade de vida do número cada vez maior de pacientes que vivem e morrem com a doença. O controle efetivo de sintomas é peça-chave para obtenção de um cuidado eficaz a esses pacientes, promovendo qualidade de vida, reduzindo efeitos deletérios da doença e devolvendo funcionalidade pelo maior tempo possível.
