Summary: Sucrose was fermented by 134 (59.8%) of the 224 strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Using Elek's method, toxigenic and sucrose fermenting strains compased 58.9% of the total. Because of these results, a revision of the taxonomic criteria is suggested.

Because of these results, a revision of the taxonomic criteria is suggested.As propriedades fermentativas do Corynebacterium diphtheriae, com relação à sacarose, foram estudadas em 224 cepas e, destas, 134 foram capazes de fermentar este sacarídeo, correspondendo a uma percentagem de 59,8%. Empregando a técnica de Elek (1949), as cepas de C. diphtheriae foram testadas quanto à toxigenicidade. O estudo comparativo entre a propriedade de fermentar a sacarose e a capacidade de produção de toxina, comprovadas pelo teste de Elek, demonstrou que o número de cepas toxigênícas e desdobradoras da sacarose - 106, ou seja 58,89% - era maior do que o das cepas toxigênicas não fermentadoras - 74, ou seja, 41,11%.
