Summary: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a genetic disease characterized by the presence of hemoglobin S (HbS), leading to the formation of sickle-shaped red blood cells and resulting in a range of clinical complications. This narrative review addresses recent advances in understanding and managing SCA, highlighting general aspects of the disease, nutritional challenges, psychosocial issues, and new therapies. Advances in the understanding of pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment, including pharmacological therapies and emerging therapeutic approaches such as gene therapy and genetic editing, offer hope for improving health outcomes and quality of life for patients with SCA. However, persistent challenges such as malnutrition, psychosocial issues, and disparities in access to treatment remain significant obstacles. A multidisciplinary and holistic approach is essential to address these challenges and improve outcomes for individuals affected by this debilitating disease.

Editora Brazilian Scientific Publications2024-06-14info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://bjihs.emnuvens.com.br/bjihs/article/view/234510.36557/2674-8169.2024v6n6p941-957Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciences ; Vol. 6 No. 6 (2024): BJIHS QUALIS B3 - IMPACT FACTOR SJIF 5.807; 941-957Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciences ; Vol. 6 Núm. 6 (2024): BJIHS QUALIS B3 - FATOR DE IMPACTO SJIF 5.807; 941-957Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciences ; v. 6 n. 6 (2024): BJIHS QUALIS B3 - FATOR DE IMPACTO SJIF 5.807; 941-9572674-8169reponame:Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciencesinstname:Grupo de Odontologia Especializada (GOE)instacron:GOEporhttps://bjihs.emnuvens.com.br/bjihs/article/view/2345/2547Copyright (c) 2024 Adriane Menezes De Medeiros, Giuliane Botareli Cesar, Rayhanne Victoria Costa Mota Dutra, Giulianna Faypher Morena Vieira Da Silva, Selton Nunes Kurmannhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessMedeiros, Adriane Menezes DeCesar, Giuliane BotareliDutra, Rayhanne Victoria Costa MotaSilva, Giulianna Faypher Morena Vieira DaKurmann, Selton Nunes2024-06-14T22:48:46Zoai:ojs.bjihs.emnuvens.com.br:article/2345Revistahttps://bjihs.emnuvens.com.br/bjihsONGhttps://bjihs.emnuvens.com.br/bjihs/oaijournal.bjihs@periodicosbrasil.com.br2674-81692674-8169opendoar:2024-06-14T22:48:46Brazilian Journal of Implantology and Health Sciences - Grupo de Odontologia Especializada (GOE)false
