Summary: The article begins based on the premise that Christians, in all times, have wanted to understand their faith intellectually as well (Anselmo de Cantuária, Karl Barth) so as to be able to explain it to other people. The quest for understanding the faith constitutes an essential aspect of the life of the people of God throughout time. The article analyzes different conceptions in approaching this history: such as the history of the dogmas, the history of theology, the history of the Christian doctrine, the history of Christian thought. It especially delves more deeply into the Latin American aspects of this approach (Eduardo Hoornaert, Otto Maduro, Enrique Dussel). Among the conceptualizations, it highlights the concept “history of Christian thought” (Justo L. Gonzalez, Paul Tillich). As the range of the concept is immense, it is necessary to identify the fundamental theological issue of each time period and concentrate on its approach.

El artículo analiza diferentes concepciones del abordaje de esa historia: como historia de los dogmas, historia de la teología, historia de la doctrina cristiana, historia del pensamiento cristiano. Se profundiza, de manera especial, en los aspectos del abordaje latinoamericano (Eduardo Hoornaert, Otto Maduro, Enrique Dussel). Destaca, entre las conceptualizaciones, el concepto de “historia del pensamiento cristiano” (Justo L. González, Paul Tillich). Como la amplitud del concepto es inmensa, se hace necesario identificar la cuestión teológica fundamental de cada época y concentrarse en su abordaje.O artigo parte da premissa de que cristãos e cristãs, em todos os tempos, queriam entender sua fé também intelectualmente (Anselmo de Cantuária, Karl Barth) para poder explicá-la a qualquer pessoa. A busca do entendimento da fé constitui um aspecto essencial da vida do povo de Deus através dos tempos. O artigo analisa diferentes concepções de abordagem dessa história: como história dos dogmas, história da teologia, história da doutrina cristã, história do pensamento cristão. Aprofunda-se em especial nos aspectos latino-americanos de abordagem (Eduardo Hoornaert, Otto Maduro, Enrique Dussel). Destaca, entre as conceituações, o conceito “história do pensamento cristão” (Justo L. Gonzalez, Paul Tillich).
