Impacts of drought on bean and corn production in the northern mesorregion of Minas Gerais

Resumo: This research sought to analyze the occurrence of droughts and investigate their impact on corn and bean productivity in the northern mesoregion of Minas Gerais. The approach first included the analysis of drought occurrences in 25 municipalities identified by the Disaster Information System (S2iD). Subsequently, using data on precipitation and potential evapotranspiration and information on c orn and bean productivity, obtained by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), it was possible to carry out spatial trend analysis for each variable considered. The results indicated significant trends of reduction in precipitation and the Standardized Evapotranspiration Precipitation Index (SPEI) and increase in evapotranspiration during the period from 2003 to 2019. At the same time, a decrease in the average yield of corn production was observed (by 57% municipalities) and beans (in 70% of municipalities) for the same time interval. Positive correlations were observed between grain yield and precipitation and between yield and SPEI. Negative correlation values ​​were observed between grain yield and evapotranspiration. The results obtained can offer valuable information for formulating adaptation and mitigation strategies in the face of adverse climatic conditions.

El enfoque incluyó primero el análisis de la ocurrencia de sequías en 25 municipios identificados por el Sistema de Información de Desastres (S2iD). Posteriormente, utilizando datos sobre precipitación y evapotranspiración potencial e información sobre productividad de maíz y frijol, obtenidos por el Instituto Brasileño de Geografía y Estadística (IBGE), fue posible realizar análisis de tendencia espacial para cada variable considerada. Los resultados indicaron tendencias significativas de reducción de la precipitación y del Índice de Precipitación por Evapotranspiración Estandarizada (SPEI) y aumento de la evapotranspiración durante el período de 2003 a 2019. Al mismo tiempo, se observó una disminución en el rendimiento promedio de la producción de maíz (en un 57% municipios) y frijol (en el 70% de los municipios) para el mismo intervalo de tiempo. Se observaron correlaciones positivas entre rendimiento de grano y precipitación y entre rendimiento y SPEI. Se observaron valores de correlación negativos entre el rendimiento de grano y la evapotranspiración. Los resultados obtenidos pueden ofrecer información valiosa para formular estrategias de adaptación y mitigación ante condiciones climáticas adversas.  A presente pesquisa buscou analisar a ocorrência de secas e investigar o impacto das mesmas na produtividade de milho e feijão na mesorregião norte de Minas Gerais. A abordagem incluiu primeiramente a análise das ocorrências de seca em 25 municípios identificados pelo Sistema de Informações de Desastres (S2iD). Posteriormente, utilizando dados de precipitação e evapotranspiração potencial e informações sobre a produtividade de milho e feijão, obtidas pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), foi possível realizar análises espaciais de tendência para cada variável considerada. Os resultados indicaram tendências significativas de redução na precipitação e no Índice Padronizado de Precipitação e Evapotranspiração (SPEI) e de aumento na evapotranspiração durante o período de 2003 a 2019. Paralelamente, observou-se uma diminuição no rendimento médio da produção de milho (em 57% dos municípios) e feijão (em 70% dos municípios) para o mesmo intervalo temporal. Correlações positivas foram observadas entre o rendimento dos grãos e a precipitação e entre o rendimento e o SPEI. Valores negativos de correlação foram observados entre o rendimento dos grãos e a evapotranspiração.
