The illustrated magazines produced in the first half of the 20th century in Rio de Janeiro had an important role in the spread of cultural values, customs and in the introduction of modern advances, such as the car, the airplane, the buildings and the increasingly urban way of life. Considering the nonexistence of television; the limited radio broadcasting; the difficulties in graphic printing of photographs; and the fact that the majority of the population was composed of illiterate people at that moment, it can be easily understood why drawn Illustration was a privileged means of communication. Among the illustrators and caricaturists in Rio de Janeiro during that period, J. Carlos (1884-1950) stands out with an extensive and brilliant work. In his work, it can be noticed the importance given to the female figure. His drawings were published in several magazines, such as: “Careta”, “O Malho”, “Para Todos...”, “O Cruzeiro”, “Tico-tico” among others, which produced a record of the society of the federal capital of Brazil at that time. In this scenario, the illustrations made by J. Carlos for the covers "Para todos ... " magazine between the years of 1922 and 1931 were chosen as the object of analysis. Emphasis was given to the study of visual strategies used by the artist to draw the female figure for the covers published in that period. This study has an exploratory approach for which the collection of journals available on the web site "Jota Carlos em revista" was mainly used. As to the means, it is a bibliographical and documentary study mostly based on theoretical studies carried out by DONDIS (2003) on techniques of visual communication and texts written by FONSECA (1999); LAKE (2001); LIMA (1963) and TEIXEIRA (2005) on humor drawing. It could be perceived different forms of representation of the female figure, according to the scenario, theme and other characters in the scene. Moving between the real and the caricature, J. Carlos developed different representations for different contexts. Oscillating between the tangible and the illusory, his drawings enable various readings, so that it is possible to say that not only did they encourage but also questioned the new women’s roles at that moment. |
