Preferência dos pacientes em relação à idade, gênero e traje do ortodontista

Resumo: The objective of this study was to investigate if patients from different age groups are influenced by the age, sex and attire of the professional when they choose for an Orthodontist. Methods: A questionnaire was designed to assess the opinion of 360 patients for choosing among 4 dentists and 3 attires. The patients were divided into 3 groups: children aged 8-11 years old (n=120, Group 1); adolescents aged 12-17 years old (n=120, Group 2), and young adults aged 18-25 years old (n=120, Group 3). Chi-square test was used to investigate the preference for professionals (based on age and sex) and their respective attire, while the statistic test of proportion was used for multiple comparisons, being adopted the level of significance of 5% (p<0,05) in all tests. Results: The analysis of the total sample (n=360) revealed preference for young female Orthodontists (41.1%). White coat figured as the preferred attire (48.1%), followed by social clothing (31.7%) and thematic paediatric coat (19.7%). In the analysis of groups, the young female Orthodontist remained preferred for children and adolescents, while for Group 3 preferences were not evident. Regarding the attire, Group 1 preferred the social clothing, while Groups 2 and 3 preferred the white coats. Conclusion: Apart the age range, appearance is an important aspect for choosing an Orthodontist. The participants of the present study preferred younger Orthodontists.
