Resumo: |
Knowing the socio-demographic profile of the edentate patient is of great relevance for the realization of the adequate planning of rational and effective practices of preparation of total prostheses, seeking for the re-establishment of his masticatory functions, the esthetic and the phonetics. Faced with this challenges, this study aimed to evaluate the socio-demographic profile of total prosthesis users. For this reason, patient records of 686 patients assisted by the discipline of Total Prosthesis of the Faculty of Dentistry of Alfenas (UNIFAL-MG) in the period between 2003 and 2013 were assessed. The characteristics of each patient were analyzed according to his gender, his chief complaint, his age group, his temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD), his systemic diseases, his use or non-use of dental prostheses and the time of use of the last prosthesis. The data obtained were tabulated and analyzed with the usage of the program EpiInfo for Windows - version 7.5.1 (EpiInfo Inc. Chicago, II) and the results were expressed in the form of graphics and tables. The results obtained demonstrate that, among the patients assisted, there was the prevalence of the feminine gender (63,4%). In both genders the chief complaint was the loss of the masticatory function, followed by the deficient esthetic. The age group with the biggest representativeness was between 51 and 70 years old (32,5%). Only 4,3% of the female gender and 0,8% of the masculine gender affirm to have TDM. Among the most reported diseases by the patients there are hypertension (39,64%) and diabetes (16,93%). The majority of the patients had already been using total prostheses (77,8%) and only 22,2% of them were going to use the prosthesis for the first time. Independently from the type of prosthesis (superior or inferior), its time of use for the patient was higher than 20 years (41,9% superior and 38,4% inferior). It can be concluded that the patients who needed total prostheses are in the majority females, with an age older than 50 years and are already users of total prostheses. They do not realize periodic changes of the prostheses, once they are used for an extremely long time, since the substitution happens after the loss of the masticatory efficiency. Knowing the profile of these patients is important to implement actions in the University, so allowing a more personalized treatment according to their needs |
