Resumo: The consumption of psychoactive substances has always been present in the history of mankind, in all civilizations and cultures. However, drug consumption as we see currently is recognized from the moment it becomes a social and public health problem very present in the daily life of contemporary society, which has undergone intense political, social, economic and cultural transformations since the beginning of capitalism. Accompanying these transformations in society, the increase in drug consumption has become evident and has been considered as a result of the chaos established in contemporary society, not as a cause of these problems. The main challenge of the drug problem is the characterization of the phenomenon, together with the absence of integrated public policies, which hinders the development of an inclusive system for users of psychoactive substances. Among the diversity of scenes that can be explored along with the phenomenon of crack consumption, the present research was configured to cover the questions between the crack user and the context in which he lives, as well as the impacts resulting from drug use in his life and health. In this sense, we understand that there is still much to be understood about the triad: environment - psychoactive substances - subject. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of the environment and the impact of crack consumption on the life and health of users, as well as to identify behaviors, practices and meanings related to crack consumption and the life history of the subjects, proposing a look more critical and reflective of reality. For that, the qualitative research was chosen, using semi-structured interviews as a tool for data collection. The survey was conducted only in open scenes of crack consumption, in five neighborhoods of the city of Bauru, SP. The majority of crack users interviewed were male adults aged 18 to 26, who declared themselves to be black or brown and citizens of the city. The low level of schooling and the predominance of informal work were also characteristic features present in the reality of the interviewees. According stated by interviewees, the beginning of the consumption of psychoactive substances occurred almost always in adolescence, showing the fragility of the individuals in this age group, being in most cases associated with the consumption of substances, such as alcohol and tobacco. In addition, it was possible to identify personal and social vulnerabilities and risk behaviors associated with crack consumption, such as pipe sharing, prostitution and multiple drug use. The panorama revealed in the present study showed the situation of abandonment in which this part of the population lives and how it has been neglected by the public power, raising, therefore, problems and questions that need to be treated with courage and determination by society.
