Resumo: |
Odontology has studied the breast-feeding and the development of the stomatognathic system, emphasizing its importance in the prevention of a great deal of pathologies and alterations of the face and the occlusion. Several studies have shown an association between the installation of deleterious habits and the development of bad occlusions in children, related to the lack of breast-feeding. The objective of this study was to verify the existence of a causal relation between natural feeding and the presence of non-nutritious suction habits in children from 0 to 12 years old in the city of Uniflor. Questionnaires were applied to 150 mothers of children from 0 to 12 years old residents in the county. The descriptive analysis showed that 90,3% of the children were breastfed, being 49% for a period longer than 6 months. Among the main causes of weaning were the mother s personal reasons (32,2%), the baby s rejection to the mother s milk (29%) and the lack of milk (20,8%).85,9% of the children made use of the baby bottle being 73% associated to the natural feeding. The baby bottle was left by 56,8% of the children at the age of 3 to 5 years old. The pacifier was used by 53,2% of the children and the digital suction was evidenced in 10,4% of the children. The abandon of the pacifier occurred at the age group of 3 or less years old (61,8%) and the digital suction in 60% in children younger than 2 years old. The Chi-square test pointed out difference statistically significant between breastfed and non-breastfed children to the use of pacifier (p=0,00000057) and to the digital suction and breast-feeding this difference was not significant 0,1(p=900912). 79,3% of the mothers reported unawareness about the importance of the natural suckling in the facial development of children. To the level of education of the mothers it was verified 40% with high school and 32,7% under elementary school. It s concluded that: the non-nutritious suction habits were present in a great part of the studied sample; the use of pacifier was less frequent in breastfed children; the lack of information of the mothers pointed out to the need of implantation and implementation of specific programs, with preventive and educative actions for all the community, in order to guarantee the promotion and prevention in health. |
