The objective of this research was to examine the perception of the zoonosis and responsible pet care by the parents from public schools kindergarten and also evaluate the knowledge of zoonosis prophylaxis and responsible pet care by the people's community of Dois irmaos area, Metropolitan Region of Recife , Brazil. The contamination of soil of this area with Ancylostoma spp and Toxocara spp eggs was also estimated. First of all two convenience samples of 64 parents and 149 people from two public schools kindergarten and the people's community respectively, located at Metropolitan Region of Recife, was surveyed using the perception questionnaire. Findings indicate that 71.8 % of parents and 83.9% the people's communities don’t know the meaning of the term zoonosis, but 16% and 0.67% in that order recognized at least one type of kind of disease. On the other hand, the diseases transmitted from animals to humans were associated to the way of transmission. The major pet health care reported was rabies immunization program ranged from 65.1% to 92.2% for the people's community and parents respectively, following byanthelmintic therapy, pet care provide by a veterinarian prescription medication and sanitary-hygienic conditions. Zoonotic parasitoses transmitted by dogs and cats feces were recognized by 18.2% of the people’s community and 23.4% of parents questioned. In order to evaluate the contamination of soil garden, back yard with Ancylostoma spp and Toxocara spp eggs, samples from 149 soil houses and two public schools playgrounds areas were collected during summer and winter and analyzed by centrifugal flotation technique by using of 33% Zinc sulfate solution. The results showed Ancylostoma spp and Toxocara spp eggs in 4.69% (07/149) and 8.73% (13/149) of samples respectively from garden, back yard , but eggs of nematodes were not recovered from public schools playgrounds. The results showed the human to helminthes with zoonotic potential may be higher indoor than outdoor. In conclusion, in order to reduce the risk for zoonosis, the people surveyed should be educated not only about the risks the diseases transmitted from animals to humans butalso the responsible pet care. On the other hand this it was demonstrated the importance of veterinarians to advice on prevention of these diseases. |
