Resumo: The objective of this research is to analyze the social representations of rural women on the knowledge built from its insertion in social movements located in the municipality of Afogados da Ingazeira-PE. Participant observation were conducted semi-structured interviews and focus groups with women in the Women Producers Network Pajeú (RMPP). Rural women, social subjects of this research, belong to three groups productive members RMPP. The theoretical foundation of the research includes predominantly the concepts of social movements, local development and social representations, in addition to social, political, historical and cultural present in the drafting process. From the women's reports, it is noticed that there were several changes in their lives provided by knowledge derived from interactions with social movements. The knowledge built in social movements represented by the Communication refers the social representations of rural women who see in the statements, and the interaction with other social subjects the construction of knowledge. The knowledge represented by autonomy / power match the social representations that see knowledge as a tool for empowerment, and for transformation of power relations. The knowledge represented by the creativity alludes social representation of the skills developed / improved in social movements. According to the social representations of the knowledge developed by them, the changes exceeded the economic and social aspects, since, encouraged the autonomy, as well as, increased self-esteem, in addition to improvement in communication and interaction with people. Women believe also that the knowledge built in social movements, contributing to local development, therefore, understand that this development perspective correspond to notions such as human development, citizenship, welfare and improvement in quality of life.
