Resumo: This research is based in order to examine the formation of the agricultural technician in federal institutions of vocational technical schools in the state of Pernambuco in perspective of the rural extension to the family farm. To this end, the courses were selected in Technical Agriculture 's Agricultural College Dom Agostinho Ikas (Codai), linked to the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), and the Course of Technical Agriculture of Campus Vitoria de Santo Antão, which is part of the Federal Institute Education, Science and Technology of Pernambuco (IFPE). The study is structured on a combination of analytical techniques, including a literature review, document analysis and semi-structured interview script. As the main theoretical referential, we used Abramovay, Callou, Caldart, Caporal, Freire, Ploeg, Lima, Peixoto, Wanderley and laws, decrees and other legal provisions on technical education. We analyze the documents regarding the courses and the school disciplines in addition to material obtained through interviews with the graduates about their conceptions regarding the extension students. In the course offered by Codai revealed that the rural extension is not among the topics covered in the technical training courses, with regard to the subjects and practical activities. Moreover, the students participate in some opportunities, faculty research projects, which put them in contact with the fieldwork technical assistance and rural extension. In the course offered by IFPE in Vitoria, the rural extension appears between the themes of training. The analysis shows that the discipline is connected to the diffusionist rural extension, but the interview with the students revealed that, despite the view of rural extension as a process of bringing scientific improvements to the countryside, empirical knowledge of the farmer should be considered in the exchange of experiences.
