Resumo: During the last two decades Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (CVL), has become endemic in several regions of Brazil in the face of social and ecological features which results in its expansion including no endemic areas. Because of that, the urbanization of CVL has been associated to environmental and social features. The goal of this work is to study the perception by the owners , and the epidemiological, clinical aspects of the Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis. During the sorological survey to leishmaniasis in dogs from Itamaracá island in 2005, a total of 165 people from different sex and ages were interviewed. According to the survey, 74% reported that there was not a periodic garbage collection, and 52% of these people, threw away the garbage on street, and 97% of interviewed people, mentioned that they don´t have a local sanitation systems. With the objective of re-evaluate the situation of CVL in that county, 199 blood samples of domicilated dogs from diferent sex, breed and ages were collected in the Itamaracá county, and analysed by the enzimatic immunoassay test (ELISA). Among the examined dogs, 4.5% (09/199) presented anti-Leishmania major-like antibodies. The results showed the decrease of infection in that county. In spite of the clinical signs 88.94%(177/199) of these dogs did not present clinical signs of the disease. For the evaluation of platelet count in dogs with natural infection of Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi in the metropolitan region of Recife (MRC), 35 animals from diferent sex, breed and ages were analyzed. The individual analysis revealed a normal platelet count in 51,43 % (18/35), thrombocytosis in 28.57% (10/35) and thrombocytopenia in 20% (07/35) of dogs. According to interviwees, the results showed a clear perception of the problems that residential solid waste, basic sanitation system, changes of natural landscape and the existence of sandflies may contribute in the transmission of CVL. On the other hand, besides the reduction of CVL on Itamaracá Island some control measures for canine kalazar may be continue in the city of this study. The platelet count, is not a importat tool for the diagnosis of CVL.
