Resumo: |
This dissertation analyzes and compares two autobiographies - Memórias de um sobrevivente (2001), by Luiz Alberto Mendes and Estação Carandiru (1999), by Drauzio Varella - focusing on the same physical and social space: the Casa de Detenção de São Paulo, better known as the Carandiru. The main problem is the following: what are the different and similar aspects that appear in the two autobiographical books and what factors may be associated to the constitution of such viewpoints, in such a social place incompatibility, even around the same space, the Casa de Detenção de São Paulo? Beginning with this question, the general goal is to analyze two autobiographical books on Carandiru, constructed from different perspectives in relation to the real, in dialogue with the issues involving memory and what is connected to it, such as the reading constitution and the influences on the social horizon of those who remember. To get this goal, in a first moment, the studies in the autobiography are used to understand the movements in the writing and the intervention of this genre in the narrative of Varella and Mendes. In a second moment, the possible influences of the reading formation experienced by Luiz Alberto Mendes and Drauzio Varella in their autobiographical books are observed. Then, the self-building that narrates in the fictional or memorialistic composition of the account is analyzed and, finally, the books are compared, extracting from the comparisons the similarities and differences between the narratives about the representation of the prison space, its social organization and internal regiment created by the inmates. The theoretical basis of this work focuses on autobiographical studies and theorizations about the elements that compose it: reading, memory, testimony and the voices present, both in the construction of the text and in that of the autobiographical author. Therefore, the works O Pacto Autobiográfico: de Rousseau à Internet (2014), by Phillip Lejeune, As pedras e o Arco (2004), organized by Regina Zilberman, Cultura escrita, literatura e história (2001), by Roger Chartier, Leituras: do espaço íntimo ao espaço público (2013) by Michèle Petit, A memória, a história, o esquecimento (2007), by Paul Ricouer and Gêneros do discurso (2016), by Mikhail Bakhtin were utilized. The dissertation is divided into two theoretical chapters, a methodological chapter, in which the writers are introduced, the works and the chosen analysis methodology -content analysis, conceptualized by Laurence Bardin (1977) - and a chapter of analysis. At the end of this research, it is concluded that there are more similarities than differences in the descriptions made about Carandiru, which remained practically unchanged between the 1970s and the 1990s. These similarities are related to the emancipation brought about by reading and literature in Mendes so that a symmetry could exist between the writings of such different subjects. The main difference between the narratives is more the intentionality of the authors and the uses of the autobiographical genre than the asymmetry of social location that the writers occupy. |
