Resumo: Rivera lived in a historical period of great political and social transformation in the bordering region between the American colonies and the decadent Iberian nations. During the first three decades of century XIX, the River Plate region, bordering area between the Portuguese and Hispanic colonies in the Meridional America, has passed through movements of political character: the colonial pact destructuralization, the independence process of Buenos Aires, its bordering attachment with the Oriental Banda and Missões, where the Missões territory disputed by the Iberian nations and later by their ex-meridional colonies. In this panorama, the Plate politics created a series of political tendencies which appeared with the purpose of supplanting the vacuum of the power left by the Iberian nations in the region. The main political stages of Rivera will be presented in this work, from the beginning of his performance with the artiguismo to the Missões campaign in 1828. The caudilho political articulation with the Plate politics led him to the first Uruguay Presidency, and the period between 1811 and 1828 was the organization and leverage moment of his political carrier. His polemic attitudes changed him into a singular politician, always involved in all main Plate politics concerns and transformation of that time. Therefore, in this work, it has been searched to integrate the main political processes with Rivera s image, together with the power of the Missões Orientais in the political game of the caudilho s life
