Resumo: The present study discusses about the concept of a childhood in Jean Jacques Rousseau with the objective of analyzing the contribution and the pedagogical and philisophical relevance of this concept to the presente. Rousseau conceived the childhood as a child’s own phase, respecting their particularities and specificities, positioning the child in the middle of his pedagogical theorization. To perform this research, of bibliographic nature, delimited the works Emilio or Of Education, especially the books I and II, which refers of the childhood period, understood from birth to twelve years old and also the secondary bibliography specialized on the theme. In the first chapter, historical and thematic aspects are presented which aim to contextualize the problematic of study. In the second chapter explains conceptual aspects (assumptions), subjacent to the childhood notion in Rousseau. In the third chapter investigates the meaning of Rousseau’s pedagogical thesis conteined in the expression “to consider the child in the child” and that involves the first and the second child in the author. It’s concluded with the presente study that the child, in Rousseau, needs to be considered from his own nature, going throgh specific phases over the life course, experiancing his childhood.
