Resumo: The population aging is a global phenomenon that brings social and economic repercussions for the government, society and the family, which requires the implementation of public policies that address care to the elderly population. Within this context of human aging, there is a concern on issues that involve violence against the elderly. Violence against the elderly people is an evident phenomenon in the current process of global population aging. This study is aimed at knowing the actions and interventions performed by a group of professionals who work in the Family Health Strategy in one city within Rio Grande do Sul (RS) with regards violence against the elderly; characterizing the professionals who work in the Family Health Strategy specifically within the sociodemographic characteristics, identifying the actions taken by the professionals of the Family Health Strategy when they find an elderly in risk or in situations of violence and to verifying the self-reported knowledge of the professionals who work in the Family Health Strategy related to the Elderly Statute. For data collection purposes was used a tool for assessing violence against the elderly. This is a descriptive and analytical quantitative research with a cross-sectional and population perspective that was developed among the professionals who work in the Family Health Strategy (FHS). The data were interpreted using statistical packages such as SPSS for Windows 18 and Statistic 6.0. To analyze the relationships of the dependency between all variables were used the Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests. Data were analyzed for significance level of 5% (p ≤ .05). The results show that professionals still need more knowledge with regards the topic of violence against the elderly; in addition there is a required training to concretize the identification and the referral of the grievance of the elderly victims of violence. The majority of respondents, 94 (75.8%) have little (self-reported) knowledge on the Statute of the Elderly.
