Resumo: Mixed methods research is considered a new research approach, being recognized as the third biggest investigation approach, or research paradigm, next to qualitative and quantitative research. The mixed methods are traditionally defined by requiring the joint use of quantitative and qualitative methods, combining elements of these two investigation approaches with the objective of deepening and expanding the understanding and corroboration about a determined phenomenon. However, the mixed methods approach is still considered relatively unknown and confusing for a lot of researchers, because it is still being developed. One of the controversy and discussion points refers to the great variety of research designs of mixed methods available that the researcher can choose from. Thus, the present study had, as its objective, to assign and propose project typologies of mixed methods research in Geosciences by means of a qualifying analysis of investigation strategies applied to doctorate thesis of Geosciences Post-graduation Programs in Brazil, from 2010 to 2012. This research sought to verify the following hypothesis: Is the proposition of typologies of mixed methods research possible in Geosciences by means of a qualifying analysis of doctorate thesis of Post-Graduation Programs in Geosciences, considering the dimensions of the mixed methods research proposed by Creswell; Plano Clark (2013). Therefore, a qualifying analysis of doctorate thesis in Geosciences took place by applying a data collection protocol considering the four main dimensions of a mixed methods research and respective classes. A pilot-study and pre-tests were also applied specialists in the area. The present research is part of the mixed methods research typology called explanatory sequential project, that is, a study composed by two phases with methods implemented sequentially, starting with the quantitative data collection and ...
