Resumo: This work aimed to study the residual stresses in a butt joint welded by submerged arc process (SAW). A finite element model was built with solid elements in ANSYS program, which was used in a transient thermal-structural analysis, with the purpose of obtaining the temperature history and residual stresses. The properties of the materials were considered as a function of temperature and the heat source was modeled using prescribed temperatures in nodes of the weld elements. Birth and death elements were used to simulate the metal deposition only in thermal analysis. The results of the thermal analysis were compared with a reference work, showing good agreement. It was found that the heat source model is directly related to the shape of the weld pool and the temperature gradients in the weld region and heat affected zone. The mechanical analysis was also compared with the results of a reference with a good agreement for the longitudinal elastic deformations (welding direction). The elastic deformations profile in transverse direction showed some agreement with the reference results but the absolute values showed great divergence
