Resumo: Starling from the need to understand the inclusion of environmental education in basic schools, this study set to investigate the initial and ongoing trainig of teachers and their practices in environmental education. The subjects of the study were the teachers of elementary school I and II of the municipal and state schools in Cravinhos-SP, and the data were collected using semi-structured interviews. Ww analyzed the data from the perspective of Critical Environmental Education. Therefore, reflections on how the initial and permanent training of teachers enable or hinder the achievement of critical environmental education practices are the most significant result of this study. To understand the challenges of these teachers, their limits and achievements, we collected and looked at the data from a qualitative approach, a dilaectical and historical materialism mehod for an interpretation of reality, and, considering the critical perspective, the transformative and emancipatory environmental education. The data reveal that while the teachers demonstrate to be sensitive to the environmental dimension, they have a limited understanding of the problem, which is reflect in their occasional, discontinuous and disjointed practices. So, the Environmental Education at the research particpating schools is weakened. However, wem must consider the conditions faced by teachers in school organization and the proletarianization of their work question of the need for inclusion of environmental education in shools through its effective presence in the curricula of basic education and in the training courses for teachers. However, we hard believe in the improvement of the initial and ongoing training of teachers, giving them conditions for confronting the proletarianization process of their work, in order to make them the subjects of their knowledge and transformation agents
