Resumo: The aim of this work is to determine the physical-chemistries variables that could be used to qualify the aquatic ecosystem, relate them to the benthic community and establish approaches to infer about the quality of the water. This work took place in Gameleira stream (Uberaba, MG). The reference station was demarcated upstream and the experienced station downstream the influence of Industrial District III of Uberaba. Water was analyzed considering the following parameters: temperature, pH, electric conductivity, salinity, turbid, alkalinity, total solids, total iron, ammonia-nitrogen and total, total phosphorus, oils and greases, dissolved oxygen, biochemistry of oxygen demands, fecal coliformes, aluminum, antimony, arsenic, barium, beryl, bismuth, boron, cadmium, calcium, lead, cobalt, copper, chromium, tin, lithium, magnesium, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, potassium, silver, selenium, titanium, vanadium and zinc. In the sediment beyond the elements already cited were quantified silver, sodium, granulometric and percentage of organic matter. When pondered the parameters, total phosphorus, electric conductivity, dissolved oxygen, granulometric and elements it was verified that the experienced station met endangered by eutrophication, erosion and contamination. Among the used indexes for the benthic community, the richness and the Simpson's diversity index seem to be more efficient for pointing the better condition in reference stations. An index of water quality was proposed based on benthic community, physical-chemical parameters and on some elements potentially toxicant. It is believed that the inclusion of the parameters involve human values when pondering the colimetria and elements. Each category of date received the same burden in the index composition. The idea is that these parameters contemplate others not included, as composed organic, which represent high analysis cost. The...
