The Principle of Provenance can be understood as the foundation that consolidates the Archives Science and, therefore, consists of a concept of great reputation in this area. Regarding the practice it appears that the application of the Principle of Provenance directly affects the classification step archival documents, considering that it is the result of this principle in the first place. The archive group appears pointedly related to this context, since their appearance depends on the effective execution of the classification in archives, which in turn is the result of the Principle of Provenance. Through such theoretical approaches, the research presents the findings of the gap between theory and practice of the Principle of Provenance, believing that to resolve this inconsistency should seek alternatives that demonstrate the positive results in its use as a primary method of archival classification. Thus, the study presents a methodology for the verification of the Principle of Provenance and other principles derived from it, given its importance to the organizational praxis. Thus, understood implications regarding the relations between classification and principle of provenance of the archives, not exhausted of the technique by technique.
