Universities produce a huge volume of scientific knowledge in a continuous process. However, most of this knowledge is not properly systematic and socialized, causing losses to the development of science and society. The scientific knowledge generated by a university presents peculiarities that can not be compared to the knowledge generated in other types of organizations. Therefore, there is a need to apply methods, techniques and tools appropriate to this type of environment that provide the systematization and sharing of that knowledge. Thus, this study is aimed at developing a model of knowledge management (KM) representing the specificities from the field of Information Science of Sao Paulo State University (Unesp). To this end, we developed a qualitative study, descriptive and exploratory, whose progression was planned in five steps. The first step was the survey, selecting, reading and analyzing the literature related to issues and phenomena akin to the object of research, aiming to build a theoretical foundation for the study. The second step of the study elaborated the methodological procedures of the research defining the type of research, the universe, the target population/subjects of research and the data collection instrument. The third step collected information that could help to characterize the Department of Information Science (DCI) and the Post-Graduation Program in Information Science (PPGCI), as well their professors/researchers. The fourth step, performed after the qualification exam for the dissertation, raised information about the generation, socialization, appropriation and communication of scientific knowledge among the research subjects, whose collection was conducted through a questionnaire developed from the information analyzed in the first two steps.
